I am an analytical sociologist and a segregation scholar who combines statistical and simulation methods to analyse school and residential segregation dynamics.

Presentation

Social phenomena are beautifully complex, with numerous interdependencies varying in many ways and intensities. Unraveling this complexity motivates my work at IAS.

By combining the flexibility of simulation models to analyze interdependent behaviors with the suitability of discrete choice models to study individual behavior, I examine segregation processes from a dynamic perspective. I view these simulation models as social laboratories, helping us understand how individual actions within structural settings lead to macro-social patterns. Additionally, I use these models to evaluate the potential effects of policy interventions within a holistic, empirically-grounded framework.

I currently lead a project at IAS that evaluates how neighborhood reputations influence the residential and school choices of households in Sweden, applying large language models to study the reputation of neighborhoods in Swedish newspaper data. From 2027, I will also lead Cities in Motion: Internal Migration and the Dynamics of Residential Segregation, funded by Riksbankens Jubileumsfond, which examines how migration between Swedish cities shapes ethnic residential segregation. Drawing on population registers and large-scale agent-based simulations, it treats cities as an interconnected system rather than as isolated units.

My background in analytical sociology began at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, where I earned a Ph.D. in Sociology with a thesis titled 鈥淎 Dynamic Study of Rumor Diffusion.鈥 I then moved to LiU and the Institute for Analytical Sociology (IAS), where I have delved into segregation dynamics using statistical modeling, network analysis, and simulation tools.

I am also director of two courses in the Master鈥檚 in Computational Social Science program offered by IAS at LiU: Agent-Based Modeling for the Social Sciences and the Master鈥檚 thesis course.
