Prof. Rosen earned her PhD from RWTH Aachen University in Germany in 2004. Following her doctoral studies, she pursued postdoctoral research and held visiting scientist positions at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), USA, and the University of Sydney, Australia. In 2007, she returned to Sweden and was recruited to Link枚ping University for a tenure-track position as a LiU-Assistant Professor. Since then, she has established a state-of-the-art laboratory and a dynamic research environment that integrates predictive theoretical modeling with advanced materials synthesis and characterization.
Research
Prof. Rosen麓s research focuses on application-driven fundamental studies of novel 1D, 2D, and 3D inorganic materials, including carbides (MAX phases and MXenes), borides (MAB phases and MBenes), and a diverse range of other metallic and ceramic compounds.
Her approach combines predictive and explanatory theoretical modeling with the synthesis of particles, powders, and thin films. The structural, compositional, and fundamental properties (e.g., optical, electronic, and magnetic) of these materials are systematically analyzed. Furthermore, their potential applications are explored in fields such as energy storage, energy conversion (catalysis), water purification, electromagnetic shielding, and more emerging technologies.

Leadership and recognition听听
Prof. Johanna Ros茅n is the Director of the Strategic Research Area Advanced Functional Materials听(AFM) at Link枚ping University, where she leads strategic initiatives to strengthen interdisciplinary materials research. She is also the initiator and contact person for the LiU Profile Area MATTER, promoting collaboration across disciplines to advance materials research at the university.
Since 2018, she has served as Vice Head of the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology. In addition, Prof. Ros茅n plays a central role in the - Sweden's largest national investment in materials science - where she represents Link枚ping University in the university reference group and contributes to the strategic development.
She is an elected member of the (KVA) and the (IVA), reflecting her internationally recognized scientific achievements and leadership in materials research. Through these and other leadership roles, she actively contributes to the development of research strategy, higher education, and the future direction of materials science at both the national and international levels.
