The aim of ELLIS is to bring together leading researchers in AI. Becoming part of ELLIS gives Swedish researchers, talented individuals, companies and innovators access to leading European AI environments and strengthens Sweden鈥檚 presence in European AI. The new unit, ELLIS Sweden, will become part of a network of leading AI research environments at institutions including Cambridge, Oxford and ETH Zurich.听
LiU is already home to the AI4X Center of Excellence, a long-term initiative to strengthen research in, with and about artificial intelligence. The centre aims to create better conditions for new collaborations, greater risk-taking in research and international impact.听
鈥淭he objectives of ELLIS Sweden are very well aligned with those of AI4X, which is of course positive for LiU and can help create positive synergies,鈥 says Professor Michael Felsberg, co-director of ELLIS Sweden.
Researchers at 47 locations across Europe collaborate within the network. Four Swedish higher education institutions 鈥 KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Uppsala University, Chalmers University of Technology and Link枚ping University 鈥 are behind the Swedish unit, which will be led from KTH. A total of nine LiU researchers are members of the ELLIS network, three of whom are members of ELLIS Sweden: Michael Felsberg, Fredrik Heintz and Fredrik Lindsten.
鈥淭he establishment of the unit gives researchers access to advanced computing capacity, skills development, new opportunities for collaboration with industry and a broad international research network. This will help develop and strengthen LiU鈥檚 position as one of Sweden鈥檚 leading universities in AI,鈥 says Michael Felsberg.
The new unit also gives Sweden access to ELLIS鈥檚 large and highly competitive pool of doctoral applicants, which could be crucial in attracting outstanding international AI talent.
LiU is currently accepting new doctoral students to the ELLIS graduate school.听Applications for 2027 close on 31 October 2026.听
