Biogas Solutions Research Center was given a guided tour of the site by Rickard Olsson from Bor氓s Energi och Milj枚. The participants saw the food waste reception area and how the material is ground into smaller particles before being fed into the anaerobic digestion process. The tour involved plenty of walking up and down steep flights of stairs, as well as a visit to the biogas upgrading facility.
An early start
Biogas is produced through the anaerobic digestion of both separately collected food waste and sewage sludge. Source separation of household waste began in the 1980s. Between 1994 and 2005, the Municipality of Bor氓s expanded its composting and biogas production, initially producing biogas for heating and later for the city鈥檚 buses.
Bor氓s had to rethink its approach in 2017 when the bus operator chose a different gas supplier. Another trend in Sweden is that many municipalities are switching to electric buses
In 2022, Bor氓s Energi och Milj枚 signed a long-term partnership agreement with the energy company St1 Biokraft.
鈥淏or氓s Energi och Milj枚 produces raw biogas through the anaerobic digestion of food waste and sewage sludge. St1 Biokraft upgrades and refines the biogas and sells it on the market,鈥 says Rickard Olsson.
Liquefied biogas (LBG)
In January 2024, St1 Biokraft inaugurated its new biogas upgrading and liquefaction facility at Sobacken. Here, raw biogas from Bor氓s is processed into products including liquefied biogas, or LBG.
Liquefied biogas can be transported over longer distances than compressed biogas and sold throughout the Nordic region, particularly for use in heavy-duty transport.
The facility has a stated capacity of approximately 60 GWh per year. The partnership enables locally produced gas to reach a larger market, while allowing each party to focus on its core expertise.
